Modern consoles use the same surface-mount components as laptops. That is the reason most “dead” consoles are not dead at all — they are one damaged part away from working, and that part is usually replaceable.
Most common faults we see
- HDMI port damage — the most common fault we see on PS4 and PS5.
- Disc drive failure — usually dust, a worn laser, or a perished belt.
- Overheating and fan noise — a strip, clean and fresh thermal paste.
- No power, or the blue light of death — board-level diagnosis required.
- Controller drift — the stick module is replaced.
Working out which one you have
The symptoms overlap less than you would think, and knowing roughly what you are dealing with makes the first conversation quicker.
- Powers on, fans spin, nothing on the TV. Almost always the HDMI port, particularly if the cable was knocked while plugged in. Try a different cable and a different TV input first to rule out the obvious.
- Picture on one TV but not another. Usually a partially damaged port rather than the console itself.
- Disc goes in, grinds, comes back out. Drive mechanism — belt, gear or laser. The rest of the console is generally untouched.
- Loud, hot, shuts down mid-game. Thermal. Dust and hardened paste. This one gets worse with time and takes other components with it.
- Brief light then nothing, or a light that will not change colour. Power or board-level. Needs proper diagnosis rather than guesswork.
- Character drifts with nobody touching the stick. Controller, not console. The stick module wears out; it is a routine replacement.
What not to do
- Do not keep power cycling a console that will not start. If something is shorted, repeated attempts make it worse.
- Do not open it to have a look unless you know what you are doing. Modern consoles hide screws under warranty stickers and use ribbon connectors that break if lifted the wrong way.
- Do not run it hot for weeks because it still mostly works. Heat is cumulative, and a cheap clean now is a board repair later.
- Do not blast compressed air into the fan. Spinning a fan far past its rated speed can damage the bearing you were trying to save.
Still under warranty?
Use it. If your console is inside the manufacturer’s warranty period, that is the right route and we tell you so rather than take the work — opening it ourselves would void what you already have. Out of warranty, there is nothing left to void, and repair becomes the sensible option.
Will you lose your games or saves?
Port, fan and drive repairs do not touch storage, so games and saves stay exactly where they are. If the fault is the storage itself, that changes — we tell you before starting what can and cannot be recovered, rather than after.
Why not just buy a new one?
A replacement console costs many times what a single port or drive repair does, and the rest of the machine is usually fine. We quote before starting, so you can weigh it up with a real number in front of you rather than a guess.
