What living on the coast does to a computer
Machines here fail in ways they do not fifty kilometres inland, and it is worth knowing why.
- Salt air corrodes. Anything within reach of sea air ages faster — ports, connectors and the contacts inside a laptop. It shows up as a charging port that has become temperamental, or a machine that works only when the cable is held at a certain angle.
- Humidity and dust together. Damp dust behaves differently to dry dust. It cakes into fans and heatsinks rather than blowing out, so machines here need cleaning more often than the manufacturer would suggest.
- Sand. It gets into keyboards and fans and it is abrasive. Beach houses and holiday rentals are the worst for this.
